VBS 2012: Operation Overboard

This year’s Vacation Bible School theme is “Operation Overboard: Dare to Go Deep with God!” Dive in and discover God’s underwater universe! Swim with humpback whales and seahorses, scuba through a vibrant coral reef, and take a personal submarine to the ocean floor, where eels and octopi play. As they journey miles below the water’s surface, kids plunge into Bible stories of people with deep faith and learn to trust a God whose love is bigger than the sea. Participants will learn to “go deep” into God’s Word for their lives, exploring the meaning and application of Bible stories about people who exhibited deep faith.

Preparations are already underway with the first formal planning meeting now scheduled for Sunday, January 15 at 3 pm. If you’re interested in volunteering, contact Pastor Jenny Collins.

VBS by the Numbers

We had a great time celebrating VBS at worship on Sunday. Because of copyright issues we can’t post video, but I wanted to give a summary of VBS. We had an average of 46 kids per day and 56 different children total. Of these 25 helped us celebrate on Sunday by singing, dancing and reading during worship. The children brought 124 items for the food pantry and $125.50 for the Good Samaritan Fund.

Prayer for the Week

Sojourners had the following prayer in an email, it’s appropriate for every week, but seems particulary apt for those helping with Vacation Bible School this week:

At the start of this week, Lord, we simply take a few moments to rest in your presence and ask for you to sustain us through the next week. Amen.

More VBS Decorating

We will be decorating for VBS on Saturday, July 16, starting at 10:00 am for anyone who would like to help (or if you need to come by with questions).  Heather and I will plan to be there most of the day, so please feel free to come by any time, or you can give me a call on my cell at 252-9822, to see if we are still around.  After our work on Saturday, we will know how much or if anything needs to be done on Sunday, July 17, to get ready for VBS starting the following day.

VBS Yard Signs Are Here

Yard signs for this year’s Vacation Bible School have arrived. They’re available to be picked up at the church or you can let us know that you want one and, we’ll stick it in your front yard for you, assuming you live in the Coffeyville area. (If you’re a smart-alec who lives 300 miles away that last bit was directed at you.)

VBS Supplies Sought

We are getting ready for Vacation Bible School, coming up in mid-July, and we need your help to gather some items.  This year our theme is Shake It Up Cafe—a cooking theme.  We are looking for some empty personal sized water bottles (approx. 20 oz) for one of the experiments during our science center.  We are also wanting to collect as many clean, empty food cans and boxes as we can to be used in decorating the rooms.  We will plan to recycle these items after we are done with them.  These items can be dropped off in the “Storm Shelter” room, directly across from the “Recycling” room in the basement.  Thanks for your help!

VBS Registration Now Open

The 2011 Vacation Bible School at Coffeyville First United Methodist Church will be held Monday-Friday, July 18-22, 2011, from 9 am to 12 noon. The theme this year is, “Shake It Up Cafe: Where Kids Carry Out God’s Recipe”. VBS is open to all children entering grades K-6 and for preschool children who are a part of First UMC. I have bad news if you missed the VBS (Vacation Bible School) program Sunday, or if you saw it, but wanted to see it again. We can’t post it online because of copyright issues. We would need permission from the copyright holder of each individual song. Sorry.

VBS Sunday

We’ll be celebrating VBS (Vacation Bible School) this coming Sunday, July 18, 2010. We have about 17 kids signed up to help with the worship services. It promises to be a fun, if slightly stressful, Sunday. Hope to see you there.

VBS Report

Attendance at VBS (Vacation Bible School) has been averaging about 34 kids per day this year. (The drop in numbers from last year can probably be attributed to the fact that last year we did not have VBS the same week as Tyro Christian Church did.) The kids have been great and everything has been running smoothly. The girls to the right are just a few of the cadets who have been having a wonderful time at “Galactic Blast: A Cosmic Adventure in Praising God.” Thanks to everyone who has pitched in to help (and your flexibility in doing so).
