Blue Prayer Request Cards

istockphoto.comDo you have a prayer request you would like the church to pray for? Please help us know your prayer requests by filling out a blue prayer request card, located in the pews or in the church office, or calling the church office to let us know. We can list your name or your loved one’s name in the bulletin insert, put your prayer request in the prayer chapel for the weekly prayer vigil, put out a card for the congregation to sign, assign the person a prayer partner to pray for them or it can be for the pastors only. The blue cards help us know the nature of your prayer request and what information you would like to be shared and how.

In addition, if you know of someone who is in the hospital and would like a visit from a pastor, please let us know (we would rather hear about it from several people than to miss someone).

Prayer Vigil Openings Available

cross in handsThere are currently three time slots available during the Thursday prayer vigil: 6:00 am, 7:00 am, and 2:00 pm. The prayer vigil offers an opportunity to spend an hour in prayer in the chapel once a week. Participants spend the time as they choose: praying for folks named on the blue prayer cards and other prayer suggestions listed in a notebook, writing notes to folks on our prayer list, taking communion, etc.

If this is an area of ministry you are interested in, or would like more information about, please contact our Prayer Coordinator, Pam Jackson, or Pastor Jenny Collins.

Pastors' Report 2013

The following is our report from Church Conference:

We first want to thank you for the warm welcome we have received at Abilene First United Methodist Church. We are now five months into our appointment as your pastors here, and we feel very much at home here. We are excited about the ministries in this congregation and we are spending much of our time this first year simply getting to know people, focusing on worship and pastoral care, and being a part of the ongoing ministries of the church.

One way we enjoy getting to know people better is through the practice of going out to eat with different folks from the congregation each Sunday after the 10:30 am worship service. We have also met people for a meal or a visit during the week when that works better.

This fall, Annie Ricker, who was on staff as the Director of Caregiving Ministries, became a certified candidate for ordained ministry in the United Methodist Church. She also received an assignment to serve as the associate pastor as Hays First UMC. With her move, the responsibilities of the caregiving ministry were moved to the pastoral staff, with Pastor Jenny taking on these responsibilities and thus moving her from 1/4 time to 1/2 time.

We have been working with the Worship Design Team to incorporate worship elements that are important to the congregation as well as those that we have found meaningful throughout the years. Worship Design, as well as Staff Parish Relations Committee, have been valuable in giving us feedback as we work to create meaningful worship for persons of all ages.

During the past several months, we have enjoyed being a part of the many ongoing ministries of this church. Vacation Bible School was held with Emmanuel UMC and Trinity Lutheran Church at Emmanuel UMC. The youth have been busy writing their own creed, taking fun out-of-town trips, putting on a Christmas Pageant, and selling wreaths. Power and Light, the after school program for elementary-aged children, provides Christian education in a rotation format in which each child has the opportunity to learn the lesson through Bible story, craft, cooking, and science.   Wednesday evenings are a chance for folks to eat a meal together at our Wednesday evening meal. Several dedicated volunteers cook and clean up after the meal each week. One Friday a month, volunteers from the church help prepare and serve a meal at the Salina Rescue Mission. The United Methodist Women put on their annual bazaar this fall. The music ministry at the church is going strong, with the addition of a praise band, Generations of Praise, which enhances worship along with the Chancel Choir and the John Wesley Bell Choir. There is a weekly prayer vigil in the chapel. These are just some of the many ministries of the church.

We look forward to our on going ministry with you as we seek to make disciples of Jesus Christ. May we continue to live out the phrase that this church has embodied so well as we seek to have: Open Hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors.

Volunteers Sought for Prayer and Caregiving Ministries

Do you have an interest in being involved in a prayer or caregiving ministry? There are many different ways to be in ministry through the church. If one (or more) of the following is of interest to you, please contact Pastor Jenny.

  • Prayer Vigil—Praying for people on our prayer lists for an hour/week in the chapel on Thursdays.
  • Prayer Partner—Being assigned a person to pray for each week with a card to send to them.
  • Care Connections—Visiting one or more homebound persons each month.
  • Communion—Helping take communion to homebound persons.
  • Food—Taking food to people after surgery, illness or death in the family.

Prayer Ministry Cards

We want to take the opportunity, first, to thank you for all the prayer requests we receive on the blue cards, second, to encourage you to keep letting us know when you have prayer concerns, and third, to explain our current practice regarding prayer request cards. When you fill out a blue prayer request card, you let us know your name and contact information (so we can get a hold of you if we have questions) along with the name and address of the person for whom you are requesting prayer, and how you want them included in the prayer ministry of the church. On the blue card you can indicate one or all of the following options: to have the prayer request placed in the prayer chapel for the weekly prayer vigil, for them to have a prayer partner assigned to them to pray for them throughout the week, and/or to have their name placed on the prayer list in the bulletin. You can also indicate if the prayer request is for the pastors only.

Once we receive a blue card, if a name is to be put on the bulletin prayer list, it will remain on the bulletin for two weeks, unless there is a request to keep the person’s name on the bulletin longer (this is to keep the bulletin list from becoming too long). All blue cards that are marked to be a part of the prayer vigil in the chapel each week will remain there for 4 weeks. If the prayer concern is regarding an ongoing need, after 4 weeks, the blue card will be removed from the chapel, but the information on the card will be transferred to our long-term prayer list that also is in the chapel for the prayer vigil.

One final note, please let us know updates on the persons we have prayed for. If someone has gotten better, just let us know on another blue card and we’ll update those who have been on the long-term prayer list. Thanks!

Graduation Party for Brian Walker

Family and Friends of First United Methodist Church are invited to celebrate Brian Walker’s graduation from 4:30-6:30 pm on May 20th, at the Walker home, 410 Centennial. (The graduation ceremony for Field Kindley High School is at 2 pm in the high school gym.)

Sandwiches for Camp Scholarships

This Sunday, the Nurture Committee will be offering a lunch including make-your-own sandwiches, chips, fruit, veggies and dessert. Freewill donations for lunch will go to fund scholarships for children or youth from our church who would like to go to camp.

Children and Youth Numbers

Currently at Coffeyville First UMC we have a number of children and youth that are regular participants in Sunday School, Worship or both. We have three youth who are all seniors in high school this year. We have enjoyed the time we have spent with them during youth group and their friends they have brought with them from time to time. Their transition out of high school will leave a gap for a few years, but there are a growing number of children following not too far behind them. At present we have 8 children who are in elementary school (grades K, & 3rd-5th), as well as 8 children age 4 and under. In addition to these regulars, we have others who join us from time to time. We celebrate the opportunities to share our faith tradition with these new generations as so many generations have done before in this congregation.
