Voice of the Day: James Martin

The voice of the day for today is especially fitting for “the bleak midwinter” and comes from a book titled Between Heaven and Mirth:

“Holy people are joyful. Why? Because holiness brings us closer to God, the source of all joy.”

— James Martin, Between Heaven and Mirth: Why Joy, Humor, and Laughter Are at the Heart of the Spiritual Life

I’m only about a third of the way through this book so far, but I’m finding it both an enjoyable read and a necessary corrective to the dour tendencies of a great deal of what passes for the Christian faith (which isn’t to say that sadness and even grief aren’t sometimes appropriate among Christians). So far, it’s a strong contender for our next book study.
