Financial Peace University Coming Back to First

Megaphone on white with pathCindy Rempe will again be offering the Financial Peace University here at First United Methodist Church. This nine week series of classes will begin Tuesday, September 30, 2014. Each class meeting will last from 6:30 to 8 pm. The cost is $93, but scholarships are available (just contact me at 620-252-9622 or john@revcollins.com). You can learn more by speaking Cindy or someone who took last week’s class or online here. I would highly recommend this course to just about everyone.

Young, Younger, and Youngish Starts Tomorrow

BooksA friendly reminder to our Young, Younger, and Youngish Adults that the new Sunday School class starts tomorrow at 9:15 am. We’ll begin with introductions, housekeeping matters, and then move to sharing what parts of the Bible we’ve had questions about or difficulty with in the past.

That discussion will serve as a prelude to our first book study: Making Sense of  the Bible: Rediscovering the Power of Scripture Today by Adam Hamilton. The book isn’t required reading for the class, but it’s a solid introduction to biblical interpretation and I think you’ll find it extremely helpful. Copies will be available with a suggested donation of $16.

Books Are In

BooksThe new “young, younger, and youngish adult” Sunday school class that will be starting September 7, 2014. We will be studying Making Sense of the Bible: Rediscovering the Power of Scripture Today by Adam Hamilton. Reading the book is recommended, but not required. If you like to read electronically you can purchase a digital copy online. If you prefer to read your the old fashioned way the church office has copies available. They were $15.39 each (it’s a hardback book), but a donation of $16 would help simplify the accounting. If the cost is a problem, please speak with Jenny or me in private, we have some funds available to help out.

Young, Younger, and Youngish Adult Bible Study

Book BottomThis fall, Jenny and I are looking forward to beginning a Bible Study on Making Sense of the Bible: Rediscovering the Power of Scripture by Adam Hamilton for young, younger and youngish adults. We’re excited about the book, the possibilities for discussion and the opportunity to fill one of the gaps in our adult Christian education program. We have some great classes, but we don’t currently have anything explicitly targeted for adults our age and under (an admittedly broad category). We plan on starting on September 7, 2014 in the church library.

Resurrection Study

Our next study the time following the Wonderful Wednesday meal is titled “Resurrection.” This is a DVD study featuring N. T. Wright. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is a key component of the Christian faith, but it is often misunderstood and played down. We’ll be exploring what the resurrection was (and what it wasn’t), what it meant for the early Christians, what it means for us today and what it will mean in the end. Hope to see you there.

Always Something New

I never cease to be amazed by the Bible. There is always something new to be found. I’ve long known the biblical story of Abraham and his intended sacrifice of Isaac. But today, while preparing for Table Talk on Wednesday, I received a fresh insight, something I had never considered before. The Bible is like that. It’s a deep book, a book into which one can always delve deeper. Consider this your invitation to come and join us Wednesday (February 19, 2014) for a light supper at 5:00 pm and an in-depth discussion of the story of Abraham at 5:45. If you find the story disturbing in places, don’t worry, so do I. Bring your questions and your thoughts and let us reason together.

Table Talk: Father Abraham

This coming Wednesday (February 19, 2014), we’ll have our fourth session of Table Talk. The topic of discussion is “Father Abraham.” If you’re a person who likes to read ahead, you can look at Genesis 12-25 (don’t fret, we’ll only be reading a short portion of the story on Wednesday).

Table Talk: The Flood

This coming Wednesday (February 12, 2014), we’ll have our third session of Table Talk. The topic of discussion is the flood. If you’re a person who likes to read ahead, you’ll want to look at Genesis 6.5-9.17.

"Table Talk" Starts Tomorrow

A friendly reminder that we’ll be starting “Table Talk” tomorrow. This is a great new program after the Wonderful Wednesday meal. Table Talk will help facilitate study and conversation about key stories of the Bible. The stories are basic enough for new Christians, yet have enough unexpected flair to engage the seasoned Bible reader.

Here are the Bible stories for the first six Table Talk Discussions:

  • Creation
  • The Fall
  • The Flood
  • Father Abraham
  • Ten Words (The Ten Commandments)
  • The Great Commandment

Sessions will begin at approximately 5:45 pm, with the telling of the story, followed by questions and discussion around the tables.

"Table Talked" Postponed Two Weeks

Between first and second services this morning Jenny and I realized that we would be unable to teach “Table Talk” on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, because we’ll be at an Orders Meeting. We took a quick poll before the second worship service and decided to postpone our start of this new curriculum until January 22. Our apologies for any inconvenience. All other Wonderful Wednesday activities will continue as scheduled.

Financial Peace University Coming to First

I had a great conversation with Cindy Rempe this morning about the upcoming nine week Financial Peace University that she’ll be offering here at Abilene First UMC beginning Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 7pm. You can learn more here. Cindy’s enthusiasm is contagious, and Jenny and I are looking forward to being part of the class.
