What Makes Us the People of God
Last night, I was doing some reading for my sermon when I came across this quote from Dawn Ottoni Wilhelm. I don’t think it’s going to make it into the sermon, but I wanted to share it with you. It reminds me a lot of the church we all share.
This is the first time in the Gospel of John that Jesus’ closest disciples are named “the twelve” (v. 67). Their decision not to turn away but to walk forward with Christ draws them together as a community of faith. It is not any particular creed, mission statement, style of worship, or service program that unites them as the body of Christ. It is their professed willingness to follow Jesus Christ that renders them a community of faith. What a blessed word to remember as we agonize over mission statements, budget priorities, worship attendance, or other preoccupations of churchly life. It is our commitment to follow Christ alongside others that makes us the people of God. [1]

Introducing Julian of Norfish

I’m going to take a moment of personal privilege to introduce someone who Anna refers to as our newest staff member: Julian of Norfish. Julian is named after the famous Medieval mystic Julian of Norwich, who lived in England from c. 1343 AD to after 1416 AD.
Note that Julian has a church nametag. We’re committed to providing one for everyone who wants one.

Wednesday Night Meals
Wednesday night meals will start again on September 4, 2024, at 5:30 p.m.. This year, we’re trying something new. Instead of hiring someone to prepare the meals, we’re inviting volunteers to sign up for a Wednesday and bring a meal. Individuals, families, groups of friends, and small groups within the church can all sign up. Average attendance is typically 50-60 people. The church has $150-$240 budgeted to reimburse expenses.
Ice Cream Social
From Jenny Hutchinson, chair of Christian Family and Friendship:

You will need to bring cash if you want to vote on the best ice cream flavor. All proceeds will go to Ogden Friendship House of Hope. If you plan to bring ice cream, please email Jenny at: jenny.hutchinson5@gmail.com.”
