Voice of the Day: William Bragg

In 1915, William Henry Bragg and William Lawrence Bragg (father and son) won the Nobel Prize in physics. The quote below was from a lecture one of them delivered at Cornell University in 1919. The lecture was credited only to William Bragg, with no middle name given, so I cannot tell you which one.

“Sometimes people ask if religion and science are not opposed to one another. They are: in the sense that the thumb and fingers of my hand are opposed to one another. It is an opposition by means of which anything can be grasped.” —William Bragg, The World of Sound, 1919.

Child Check Screenings Today

There is a good chance you’ll see a full parking lot if you drive by the church building today. We’re proud to be hosting Child Check, a service for children from newborns to age five that screens for development, vision, hearing, and dental problems. It’s a cooperative effort of the Central Kansas Cooperative in Education, OCCK Infant and Toddler Services, Early Headstart, Parents as Teachers and the Salina Family Healthcare Dental Clinic.

Potluck This Sunday

The fifth Sunday of a month has once again snuck up on us. There will be a potluck meal this Sunday (January 31, 2016) in Wright Fellowship Hall following the 10:30 service. If you want you can go over to the Relay for Life Chicken Noodle Dinner, purchase some chicken and noodles and bring them back.

The Newsletter May be Delayed

Julie Mayden, our administrative assistant, is facing two big deadlines this Friday. One deadline is from the Great Plains Conference, and the other is from the Internal Revenue Service. For this reason, the newsletter may be delayed a week. Jenny and I thank you in advance for your Christian patience, love, and understanding.

More Buckets on the Way

Yesterday, we ran out of five-gallon buckets for our “flood bucket” mission project. We’ll have more buckets available next Sunday. If you don’t want to wait, you can purchase a five-gallon bucket on your own. The packing list is here: http://bit.ly/1lnOD3t. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) estimates that it costs $65 to fill a bucket. If that’s more than you can handle, you might consider finding a partner or just take a bucket and simply contribute whatever you feel that you can afford. Either way, I would encourage you to fill your bucket with the same brand and quality of items that you use at home.

Hold Your Flood Buckets!

Some of you took flood buckets home with you today after the second service, and I am so excited about that. I’ll have the list of things that need to be in them posted here soon, and we’ll have a bulletin insert next Sunday. Don’t worry if you’ve already purchased some things, we’ll take care to put them to use.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

The following announcement was received from Jackie Bailey and lightly edited:

In honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday and federal holiday a day of service is being planned in Abilene for Monday, January 18, 2016. A free noon meal will be prepared and delivered to the homes of senior citizens desiring them.

This year is the 18th year Rev. Dr. King’s life and legacy has been celebrated in Abilene, and the 8th year volunteers have come together to participate in this community project by assembling and delivering these meals.

The meals will be assembled and disbursed from The Place, 421 N Cedar in Abilene. Senior citizens wishing to receive a meal are asked to contact Jackie Bailey at [Phone number redacted for web posting. Email me at john@revcollins.com for her phone number.] and leave their name, address and phone number. The menu is homemade vegetable beef soup, corn muffin, fruit and a cookie.

Volunteers are needed to assemble and deliver the meals on that day, and those who want to volunteer their services are asked to be at The Place, 421 N. Cedar in Abilene by 10:30 on January 18. Please call Jackie Bailey if you have questions.

As of January 15, 2016, [Rev.] Dr. King would have been 87 years old. Our efforts to remember and honor this great man, his contributions and what he stood for will help us experience the fullness of this holiday.
