About Amy Rosine, Our New Choir Director

A message from our new Chancel Choir Director, Amy Rosine:

Hello!

I am thrilled to be the new choir director at College Avenue UMC! For those who don’t know me, I am a voice professor at K-State (year 16) and have been directing church music (children, youth, adult) since I was 21.

I am married to Brian Underwood, who was the manager at Blockbuster before it closed. He has been with K-State Parking services for several years.  We have two children, Elizabeth and Andrew.  Elizabeth is 24 and is completing her master’s degree in Photojournalism at Mizzou.  She is engaged and will be moving to Wyoming in December.  Andrew is a junior at K-State studying Criminology and is in ROTC.  We live on Hillview Drive, right by College Hill Preschool, so the church is just a short walk and even shorter drive.

We would love to include youth in the choir!  Please join us at 5:30 on Wednesdays if you would like to sing.  It won’t be scary, I promise!

 Amy

The Chancel Choir is Back!

The chancel choir is back! The first practice was Wednesday, September 7, 2022. It looks like we’re out of space, but don’t worry, if you want to join in we will make more room. Amy Rosine, the new choir director, and I are both committed to always having room for one more.

All Singers Welcome

The following announcement was received from Clark Williamson and lightly edited:

Today, Wednesday, August 26, 2015, our Chancel Choir will hold their first rehearsal since the summer break.  The practice starts at 7 pm for an hour and takes place in Wright Hall.  You may enter through the Choir Door from the north end of the main parking lot.  All singers are welcome.  The group is like a big family.  We sing, we laugh, and we also support each other when prayer is needed.  The choir invites new members in every vocal range and level of experience.  The Chancel Choir sings each Sunday at the 10:30 am worship service, beginning September 6, 2015.  A short warm-up takes place at 10:10 am.  If you can’t attend the first practice and are still interested in singing—come talk to me at the “Choir Sign-Up” table one of these next two Sundays.

A New Year — A New Song

The following post (as well as the title of this post) was received from Clark Williamson, Director of Music Ministries:

Our Chancel Choir will start their weekly practices again on Wednesday, the 14th at 7:00-8:15pm in the Wright Fellowship Hall.  They sing each Sunday at the 10:30 service.  We invite new singers of all vocal parts to join the group.  No auditions, all are welcome.  Come and help us bring a new song of praise to worship.  Enter through the choir door in the NE corner of the church building.  “It takes a village” to make a choir and a “joyful noise unto the Lord”.

Music Notes: "Who Shall Appear?"

Received from Clark Williamson:

The Chancel Choir’s musical offering today is the Advent anthem “Who Shall Appear?” Words and music are by John Purifoy but part of the lyrics have been adapted from prophesies of Micah and Isaiah. Midway through the piece you’ll hear our sopranos and altos in a paraphrase of Micah 5:2 proclaiming “You, O Bethlehem, who are so small, from you shall come One who is great for all.” Then later on the whole choir builds a crescendo emphasizing Isaiah 40:3-5. “In the wilderness, prepare the way. Every valley shall be lifted up, and the glory of the Lord will be revealed.” The haunting tone and mood to the music is also enhanced by the solo recorder; a wooden flute held like a clarinet and played by Mary Jo Miles.

Music Notes: Chancel Choir

Received from Clark Williamson:

Our Chancel Choir has a long-standing tradition of providing different anthems in a variety of choral music styles.   They are one of the few choirs left in Abilene which still rehearses each week to make a musical offering to God each Sunday morning.  The Chancel Choir is open to new singers in all vocal sections.   Currently, we could especially use some more people to sing soprano and tenor.   There have been a few individuals either move, experience illness, or have retired from the choir.   Practices are on Wednesday evenings in the Wright Hall at 7:00-8:15 (north end basement).  The Chancel Choir sings at our 10:30 service and meets for a warm-up at 10:10am.   Most of the music lines for the soprano and tenor parts don’t go terribly high, or stay up in range for long periods of time.   Please contact me if you’d like to participate.   Oh…and we won’t say no to altos and basses either.   “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord!”

Music Notes

Received from Clark Williamson:

  1. “Choir Sign-Up Days” are set for Sunday, August 18 and 25, 2013.   Registration will take place for all choirs for all age levels in all musical styles.  Come by the table in between services to discuss your participation in a choir with our music director or ask for more information.

  2. Our two adult choirs are switching their rehearsal nights during the new choir season.   The Chancel Choir (for singers) will now practice on Wednesdays starting at 6:30 on August 28, 2013. The John Wesley Bell Choir (for hand bell ringers) will rehearse on Thursdays starting at 6:30 on September 5, 2013.   Both of these music groups have openings and room for more musicians.

  3. “Music Ministries Sunday” is now scheduled for Sunday, October 20, 2013 at both worship services.   The morning message will be given through many forms of sacred music:  choral, traditional, contemporary, instrumental, solo-duet, and keyboards.   It’s our annual attempt to recognize the various ways our Lord enables us to praise him and also show our appreciation for the musicians who he has blessed with those musical gifts.

Excellence in Children's Ministry

Our Big Holy Audacious Goal is excellence in children’s ministry. I’ve long felt that we achieve that in places like VBS, Sunday School, and Pack Their Packs, now I think we can add another program to that list: Children’s Choir. Their first performance was at the 10:50 service this past Sunday. They sang very well. It sounded like they had a backup track but they didn’t. If you didn’t get to hear them, you missed out.
