A friend posted a picture of a whiteboard with the following statement anonymously handwritten on it. It matches a sentiment I’ve often tried to convey.
When a toxic person can no longer control you, they will try to control how others see you. The misinformation will feel unfair, but stay above it, trusting that other people will eventually see the truth, just like you did.
Writing of the weighty matter of our salvation in Romans 8:33-34, the apostle Paul wrote: “Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn?” If we can trust God with our salvation (and we can), it should be a relatively small manner to trust God with our reputations. As long as we remember that God loves and cherishes us there is no need to be overly concerned with what others think of us. Especially those who have not taken the time to get to know us for themselves.
