Voice of the Day: Stanley Hauerwas

cross of christ built into a brick wallI’m preaching on Matthew 16.13-20 this coming Sunday. In preparation, I’m reading a commentary on the Gospel of Matthew by Stanley Hauerwas, a renown United Methodist ethicist. Hauerwas has a propensity for telling uncomfortable truths and his commentary on Matthew is no exception. Here’s one that hit me:

“For many the demand to follow Jesus to be a disciple is too burdensome. Instead, they want to know more about Jesus.” — Stanley Hauerwas

I read this while sitting peacefully in my favorite recliner learning more about Jesus and it hit me square between the eyes. I much rather enjoy the pleasant task of learning more about Jesus than the difficult task of following his example. But Hauerwas has pointed out a difficult truth and Jesus has shown the way.
