The long-dominant view of salvation in the western world has been that we are being saved from and out of the world. The image might be described like this: the church is a lifeboat for a ship that is going down. The world is a wreck and doomed to sink, but a few lucky people will be plucked off the wreckage. This image is not a biblical one. The Bible speaks not of disembodied souls that one day fly away but of resurrected bodies in a world made new. Brian McClaren has a great summary of this view and I want to share it with you:
“The Gospel is a Transformation plan, not an evacuation plan.” —Brian McClaren
That’s short, pithy, and memorable. I hope you’ll keep it in mind.
