Musical Notes: Bell Choir Prelude

Received from Clark Williamson:

Our John Wesley Bell Choir will be ringing a work of Derek Hakes entitled “Morning Song of Praise”.  The musical material is an arrangement of two songs found in our United Methodist Hymnal and other Protestant denominations.  The first hymn tune NICAEA  is used for the very familiar “Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty.” For the second theme, Mr. Hakes incorporates the hymn tune LAUDES DOMINI.  Our hymnal uses that melody to sing the lyrics on page 185 for “When Morning Gilds the Skies”.  Both tunes and text create a general mood of “praise”.   “Holy, holy, holy!  Lord God Almighty!  All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea.  Holy, holy, holy!  Merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity.”  “When morning gilds the skies my heart awaking cries:  May Jesus Christ be praised!  Alike at work and prayer, to Jesus I repair:  May Jesus Christ be praised!”
